Awareness is the first step to learning anything

When learning social emotional skills this is especially true because we are talking about things we cannot see- emotions, feelings and self-awareness.

Help children “find” their inner focus by using sound.  Have the children sit with their eyes closed (preferred but not necessary) while you ring a bell.  Move around the children and ask them to “find the sound”.

Q: Is it in front of you now? Is it up high or down low? (directional awareness)

Q: Can you point your finger toward the sound? (interactive option)

Next, strike the bell or a metal singing bowl and allow the sound to flow and fade out slowly.  Ask the children to focus on the sound until they can no longer hear it.

Q: Do you feel the sound in a part of your body? Put your hand on that part if you feel it. (focus on self)

Q: Raise your hand when you can no longer hear it. (interactive option)

Invite breathwork, by asking the children to take a deep breath into their belly button while you ring the bell or bowl. Next have the children exhale very slowly and try to last as long as the sound.

Now try going into your regular lesson plan.  Hopefully, you find the children are calm and focused.
