Circle of Security: A great visual

This visual representation summarizes for parents a child's needs while exploring their world. It is vital for a child to develop a sence of security and connection to their adults.

This sense of security is like a milestone in that other self-regulating and interapersonal skills will build on this perseved sense of the world. The majority of 'behaviors' are simply a lack of communication skills- not only in the child but in the adult.

How Do We Improve Communication?

Slow down, take the time to listen.

Reward and acknowledge the behaviors you like.

Offer alternate choices to behaviors you don't like.

Show interest in their independance, exploration and efforts.

Most Parent Education curriculum agree on one key element to nurtuting a sense of security: 15 minutes per day with each child in an activity of the child's choosing (Yes, you can make a list of reasonable choises.)

There are many adults in a childs life: parents, step-parents, grandparents, foster parents, older siblings, extended family members, child care providers, teachers, youth leaders, religious leaders and many, many more.

Be the adult who helps a child develope their sense of security!
